AGM batteries are maintenance-free gel batteries.
AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat. This relates to the type of technology in the battery. The batteries are maintenance-free, that is to say; There is no need to periodically refill distilled water. We call these maintenance-free models SLA (Sealed Lead Acid), or VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid). These are available in AGM and Gel technology.
Popularly, no distinction is often made between the different Gel batteries. An AGM battery is always a Gel battery. But a Gel battery is not always an AGM battery.
AGM can be used for many applications. The batteries differ from Gel by being able to supply instantaneous large currents. These also have full capacity available straight out of the packaging. These do not last as long as Gel, but on the other hand the price is also proportionately lower.
